City Namesake: Meaning of the Name “Duluth”

Duluth, Minnesota was named after the French soldier and explorer Daniel Greysolon, Sieur DuLhut. “DuLhut” was also spelled “Du Lhut,” “Du Luth,” or “Duluth”.

One interesting fact about Daniel Greysolon is that his lifespan closely matched the French king under whom he served, the famous Louis XIV. Also known as the Sun King, Louis XIV lived from 1638 until 1715, and he ruled France from 1643 to 1715. DuLhut lived from 1639 until 1710, and served in the French military from 1657 to 1696.
